Master of Science in Banking and Finance offers scholarship funded by PRiM
November 2009

The Luxembourg School of Finance (LSF) is pleased to announce the establishment of an annual scholarship award of €3 000 to support LSF students with a professional interest in the field of risk management. The scholarship of €3 000 will be funded by PRiM, the Luxembourg-based association of professional risk managers, and will be awarded once per year. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in the LSF Masters of Science programme in Banking and Finance, must work in Luxembourg and live in the Grande Région.

New Professors for the Master of Science in Banking and Finance

October 2009- Prof. Thorsten Lehnert joins the LSF as Professor of Finance

Professor Lehnert will be joining the LSF as Professor of Finance in October 2009. Previously, Professor Lehnert taught in the Undergraduate, Graduate and MBA programs at Maastricht University, Radboud University Nijmegen and Düsseldorf Business School. Most recently, he was Director of the research master program at Maastricht University, board member of the Maastricht Research School of Economics of Technology and Organizations and academic advisor to the Dutch Ministry of Finance. He obtained a PhD in Finance from Maastricht University. He has published articles on Risk Management, International Finance, as well as on Behavioral Finance in academic journals including Management Science, the Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics, the Journal of International Money and Finance and the Journal of Derivatives. His research interests focus on volatility modeling for option valuation, the role of behavioral heterogeneity in explaining option markets and the informational efficiency of financial markets.

     

August 2009- Prof. Theo Vermaelen joins the LSF as a Guest Professor

Schroders Chaired Professor in International Finance and Asset Management, Prof. Theo Vermaelen will be joining the LSF as a Guest Professor as of August 2009. Professor Vermaelen is Professor of Finance at INSEAD where he teaches in MBA and Executive programmes. He has also been a visiting professor at the London Business School, UCLA and is a regular visitor at the Graduate School of Business, University of Chicago. He has obtained an MBA and PhD in Finance from the Graduate School of Business, University of Chicago. Dr. Vermaelen has published numerous articles on share buybacks,dividend policy,capital structure, death spiral convertibles, initial public offerings, mergers and acquisitions in leading academic journals, including the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, The Review of Financial Studies and the Journal of Banking and Finance. He is co-editor of the Journal of Empirical Finance. His current research focuses on making the link between corporate finance and asset management. Specifically, his research aims to show how corporations time the market when they make capital structure decisions and how investors can exploit these anomalities.

         
     

September 2009- Prof. Harry Grammatikos joins the LSF as Professor of Corporate Finance

Professor Grammatikos will be joining the LSF as Professor of Corporate Finance in September 2009. Previously, Professor Grammatikos has taught in the Undergraduate and MBA programs at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, at New York University, at Hofstra University and as a Visiting Professor at the School of Business, University of Piraeus, Greece. Most recently, he was Associate Director at the European Investment Bank and was responsible for the Planning, Budget and Control unit. He obtained a PhD in Finance from New York University. He has published articles on banking, futures and options markets, as well as on dividend policy in academic journals including the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Business, the Journal of Monetary Economics and the Journal of Banking and Finance. His research interests focus on the re-examination of extant finance questions, including dividend policy,agency issues and market efficiency in view of the new experiences stemming from the recent financial crisis.

       
   

June 2009 - Mr. Julian Presber joins the LSF as Coordinator of Relations with the Financial Centre

Mr. Julian Presber joins the LSF as Coordinator of Relations with the Financial Centre. He was previously engaged in a distinguished career in banking, lastly as Managing Director at State Street Bank Luxembourg S.A. Mr. Presber earned a MBA degree from INSEAD. In the time he is not at the LSF, he is working towards a PhD degree at the International School of Management in Paris. Mr. Presber is and was involved in numerous professional activities for bodies such as ABBL, ALFI, COBMA and CSSF. He is a German as well as a Canadian citizen.

Farewell Ceremony for Professor Michel, June 9, 2009

The halls of the Luxembourg School of Finance were full on the evening of June 9th to bid farewell to one of the founding pillars of the LSF, Professor Pierre-Armand Michel. Attended by well over 100 people, distinguished guests included Minister Bitgen, Mr. Thiel, Mr. Dondelinger and Ms. Erna Hennicot-Schoepges.

2009 New York Stern School of Business

Between September 14 and September 18, 2009, full-time and part-time students will travel to New York to attend a week long residential academic week at
the Stern School of Business. Set up by the program director, Professor M. Gruber (who also teaches in the Luxembourg program), the program consists of
30 lecture hours with renowned professors such as Pr. S. Brown, A. Saunders and Roy Smith.
